Confederate Memorial Day
Okay, originally I was going to write about Zen, but I read the paper this morning and changed my mind.
Today, May 10, is Confederate Memorial Day here in SC. By State Law, all State offices are closed. Some are quite perturbed that many schools aren't closed. There is even talk of writing a new law to force schools to close on this day.
BAH!
I really can't stand these idiots (to put it mildly) who think that the Civil War was a "noble cause" and that those who fought in it (read: those who fought for the South) were heroes, fighting against tyranny and for State's rights.
Double BAH!
The Civil War was about slavery, folks. Was it about State's rights? Sure…State's rights to slavery! Those who honor/adore the "freedom fighters" with Confederate emblems and flags are very much like neo-nazis today who wave their swastikas.
That's right. I compared Confederate supporters to Nazi supporters.
Is there a difference? Sure. The Confederates didn't embark on a plan of genocide. But I'm not really comparing the actual Confederate soldiers with the actual Nazis. Rather, I'm comparing their modern-day supporters. In both cases, these people are supporting the bad guys. The people who were doing bad things. The people who eventually lost the war.
"It's about heritage!" the Confederate supporters cry. Sure. A heritage of hate.
Should we remember what happened in the past? Absolutely.
Should we honor those who fought for the enslavement of others? Absolutely NOT.
(For those of you who are now screaming in anger at me, I was born and raised in the South. I've always lived in North or South Carolina. And no, I will not "love it or leave it.")
