Narrative History

Juston Hollomon (1) (^)

1799 - ca 1872

The above spelling is taken from Juston’s will, but his name is recorded in other places as Justin, Jestin, and Jeston. He and his wife, Elizabeth had four children: Samuel S, George Dorsey, Winifred E, and James H. (2)

Samuel settled in Northampton County, NC and Winifred is believed to have done the same (3). George Dorsey relocated between Rich Square and Jackson, near Rehobeth Church (also Northampton County) and reportedly represented his district in the NC Legislature for several terms. He and members of his family are buried on his farm (4). Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico is named for Colonel George Vernon Holloman, one of George Dorsey’s grandsons (5). Colonel Holloman is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. James H., youngest of the four children, is our ancestor.

Juston was a farmer by occupation and lived in the area now known as Center Grove, near Powellsville and Ahoskie. Center Grove was selected as the name for a new Baptist Church called in 1897. His will mentions all of his children by name except James (6). However, the probate court’s certification acknowledges James H. as a party to the will (entitled to share in the remainder of the estate after debts and individual bequests) (1).

The exclusion of James by name can be explained by the conveyance on August 25, 1870 by Juston to James of fifty acres of land …"in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and beareth unto the said James H. … his part and share of the tract of land where I now live" (7). In this deed, drawn. nearly two years before his will, Juston specifically refers to James H. as his son.

On January 12, 1880 Samuel sold to James for $100.00 "a parcel of land situated in Hertford County…known as the Jeston Hollomon, Sr. homestead, where he, the said Jeston lived and died, which came in the possession of the said S.S. Hollomon by heirship" (3). The southern boundary of this tract was James ’ land, presumably the parcel given him by his father in 1870. The size of this second tract was 49 acres "more or less".

Juston’s will also mentions another fifty acres of land "being lying on the Ahoskie Swamp" which was conveyed to George Dorsey, Winifred Futrell, and Zilla Ann Elizabeth Willoughby (1). Zilla Ann is believed to have been Winifred’s daughter. This land apparently is not contiguous to the two tracts mentioned above and its eventual disposition is not known. Interestingly, Juston’s estate was appraised at "about $500.00".

The records clearly show that Juston was born in North Carolina and that he died on his homestead at Center Grove (2 , 3). It’s probable that his entire life was spent in that area. He died between June 6, 1872, the date of the will, and January 7, 1873, the date it was filed for probate. His burial place is not known.

Note: The preceding reference to "Jeston Hollomon, Sr." implies a son named Jeston. There was a younger Jeston, etc. who lived in the same time period; however, he was the son of Jalon Hollomon, not Jeston. The senior Jeston and Jalon may have been brothers (8).

James H. Hollomon (^)

1839 - ca 1895

James lived virtually all of his life in the same area at Center Grove, Hertford and Bertie Counties as did his father. The census report puts him in his father’s household in 1850 (2). In 1860 he’s reported in George Dorsey’s Northampton County home (9). Whether working there or visiting is not known. In 1870 and 1880 he’s back in Mitchell Township, Bertie County, now with his own family (10 , 11).

Like Juston , James was a farmer, occupied with such crops as corn and cotton. Although tobacco was raised in the area as early as 1804, our ancestors reportedly did not concern themselves with it until well into the 20th Century. Interestingly, his homestead was divided by the Bertie and Hertford County line, according to deeds filed at the two court houses (12). In summary, although James bought and sold other lands in the area from time to time, he farmed and lived on the same 99 acres as did Juston (13).

In July, 1862 James was enrolled for active service in the Confederate Forces and mustered into the Confederate 4th Cavalry , 59th State Troops, Capt. William Sharp’s Company of North Carolina Volunteers on August 9, 1862 at St. John’s Township, just west of Ahoskie (14). His height is recorded as 5’7" and his age as 22, which suggests a birth date subsequent to August in 1839. A value of $70 is attached to his horse, which he apparently provided.

James married Mary Ann Elizabeth Haggerthy, reportedly from Hertford, Perquimans County, NC (not to be confused with Hertford county), ostensibly while she was visiting friends in Powellsville (12). Following her husband’s death she married Henry T. Boyce.

James H. died about 1895 and is buried on his homestead (15). There are head and foot markers of stone, but neither is engraved. Mary Ann survived her second husband by many years and is buried at Stony Creek Cemetery. Informed sources say that some of her final years were spent on the Center Grove farm and the remainder with one of her sons, Quinton.

There is no recorded will for James. In December 1896 Mary Ann sold her dower from James’ homestead to Thomas Watson Hollomon for $25.00 (12). He eventually acquired the entire 99 acres, presumably by buying out the other heirs at law. One such transaction is recorded wherein Jesse Walter sold his interest to Thomas Watson in February 1897 for $25.00 (16).

There were eight children born to James H. and Mary Ann: Martha , James , Thomas , Quinton , Sallie , Joseph , Jesse , and Shepley .

Martha A. Hollomon (^)

1862 - ca 1886

Martha was known as "Gussie", leading to speculation that her middle name was Augusta. Little is known about her since she reportedly died at childbirth or shortly thereafter (19). Martha and her husband, George W. Williams had one son, C.A. who was also known as "Gussie". His name is reported to have been Cecil Augustus, a World - War I soldier killed in 1919. He had no known descendants.

Martha is buried with her father at the Center Grove homestead (no markers). According to his grave - marker at Ahoskie Cemetery, C.A. was born September 11, 1886 and died July 24, 1919. His father’s burial place is not known, but there are two unidentified graves on the plot. Martha’s birthdate is based on the US Census Population Schedules for Bertie County, Mitchell Township, years 1870 and 1880. Her date of death is estimated from her sons birthdate.

James D. Hollomon (^)

1864 - ? (11)

James D. was the first son of James H . He reportedly lived in the Center Grove/Powellsville area until he was about age 60. At that time he left Powellsville, believed destined for Florida. He never returned and, despite efforts by his brothers to locate him, James was not heard from again (19).

He married Molly Willoughby of Stony Creek. James and Molly had two children, Eva and Robert (Bob). Eva moved to Tarboro, NC at some point and obtained work. She is believed to have married, but evidence of such marriage has not been revealed. She apparently did not stay in touch with her cousins in the Powellsville area and nothing more is known of her.

Robert was a railroad employee in North Carolina. He reportedly never married and was killed in a train accident sometime after 1913.

Thomas Watson Hollomon (11) (^)

1866 - 1936

Thomas Watson, born April 1, 1866 was known as "Watt" by his contemporaries and lived his entire life in the Center Grove, Ahoskie, Powellsville area (17). As a young man T.W. occupied himself by serving as overseer and clerk to various farmers and merchants in the area.

He married Laura Louella Myers (Ella) of Overflow Farm, Powellsville, on January 7, 1894 at Powellsville (17).

Thomas Watson reportedly moved to his deceased father’s Center Grove farm in April 1896, apparently with some expectation that he would eventually acquire the property. He purchased his mother’s dower in December 1896 and Jesse Walter’s share in February 1897, each for $25.00 (12 , 16). He and Ella ultimately obtained the entire farm, consisting of the same 99 acres formerly owned by Juston and James H.

Watt stayed at the Center Grove farm until 1913. His four youngest children were born there: Lillian Earl , Clarence Elliot , Leslie Gay , and Cecil Sherwood . Luther Elmer and David Gordon preceded the move to Center Grove. In that year, according to informed sources, he moved to Overflow Farm, located two miles south of Powellsville on the west side of present day US Highway 13. This 100 acre farm was the homestead of Ella’s parents, Nathan and Sallie Askew Myers. The year of the move coincides with Sallie’s death July 10, 1913 and the sale of the Center Grove farm November 25, 1913 by T.W. and Ella to S.A. Dilday for $3,400.00 (18). Family reports say that the move was precipitated by Sallie’s death and Nathan’s advanced age (74), and that T.W. agreed to it after receiving assurance that he and Ella would become the owners after Nathan’s demise. This subsequently occurred, Ella inheriting one share and Thomas Watson buying out Nathan’s other heirs.

And so it was that the Center Grove Farm passed from Hollomon ownership following occupancy by at least three generations of them, (Juston , James H , and Thomas Watson). It is currently owned by Mrs. Annie Godwin Holloman, which line is not presently identified with ours. For several years the old homestead has been used for storage and, according to Mrs. Annie, is to be dismantled and removed to Clinton, NC by her granddaughter. The estimated dates of construction vary from post - Civil War to substantially earlier.

Thomas Watson lived the remainder of his life at Overflow Farm raising such crops as cotton, corn, peanuts, and tobacco. He died June 17, 1936 from blood poisonings, precipitated by an infected thumb (17).

Laura Louella continued on at the Farm following her husband’s death, operating it conjunction with her youngest son, Cecil Sherwood. Ella was born May 9, 1873 and died at the Ahoskie Hospital January 7, 1969 at age 95 (17). One family report has it that she spoke of being four years old and playing on the foundations of the existing homestead when it was under construction, making the house about 96 years old at this writing. It has been extensively renovated in recent years.

Thomas Watson and Ella are buried together in the family plot at Stony Creek Cemetery. They had six children: Luther , David , Lillian , Clarence , Leslie , and Cecil .

Note: it was my privilege to know T.W. and Ella during their lifetime and live in their home during the 1933 - 36 time period. Watt is remembered as a disciplinarian, a man adaptable to the times, proud, demanding of his family, and most lovable to those who understood him. He was no - nonsense, but "the latch string was always out". While Ella possessed many of these same traits she was probably more persevering. This remarkable woman was much loved by her family and admired by all that knew her.

Quinton Trotman Holloman (^)

1868 - 1927 (11)

"Quint" was born August 12, 1868 and lived in the same area as Thomas Watson . He acquired his farm, located on the east side of US Highway 13 about mid - way between Powellsville and Overflow Farm and lived out his life there (19). Quint was a charter member of the Center Grove Baptist Church, moving his membership there in 1897 from the Ahoskie Baptist Church (6).

He married Nannie Sarah Dilday on December 23, 1914. Nannie, born December 22, 1897 re - married following Quint’s death April 29, 1927. Quinton is buried at Stony Creek next to his mother (19). Both of these graves are very near Thomas Watson ’s plot and are covered with cement slabs, but there are no identifying markers.

Quinton and Nannie had three children: Helen Rhea , Elwood Lawrence , and Raymond Lewis .

Sallie Ann Hollomon (11) (^)

1871 - 1894

Sallie Ann, known as Annie by her associates, died early in life according to her son Clingman (Cling). Her year of birth is taken from the Census Records for 1880 and the year of death is calculated from information provided by Cling. He reports that she died when he was two years old. Since he was born in 1892, then Annie’s year of demise must have been 1894.

Sallie Ann is buried with her father at the Center Grove homestead. Her grave was covered with a small wooden structure, typical of the times (19). This has long since rotted away and there are no markers.

Annie married Rocheros Hollomon of Bertie County whose father was "Whit". Whit may have been Whitmill Hollomon, enumerated in the 1850 Census for Bertie County at age 42. There is no identified blood connection between Annie and Rocheros. Rocheros is buried at the Hollomon family cemetery near Mars Hill, a Powellsville community in Bertie County.

Annie and Rocheros had two children: Bessie Annie and Clingman.

Joseph A. Hollomon (11) (^)

1873 - ?

Joseph was reported in the 1880 Census for Bertie County at age 7 in the household of James H . None of the family members interviewed was aware of Joseph or his circumstances. The 1890 Census was destroyed by fire in the Commerce Department shortly after it was enumerated, eliminating a valuable source of information re: Joseph and others. He does not appear in any other documents researched by me.

There is a set of markers at the Center Grove farm burial ground spaced to conform a child’s grave. It is a reasonable assumption that Joseph died quite young and is buried with his father. The markers were never engraved.

Note: With one exception, all of those known buried at the Center Grove farm have been accounted for: James H ; Joseph, Martha , and Sallie Ann , There is also a handsome stone monument marking the grave of Percy B. Williams, 1897 - 1927. This was initially thought to be C.A. Williams, later refuted. Percy’s heritage is not known, but he reportedly was a close relative of one of the family members and resided in the household for an undefined period. He could not have been Martha ’s son, since she departed about 1886.

Jesse Walter Holloman (11) (^)

1876 - 1945

Jesse Walter, born February 15, 1876, was addressed by his middle name (23). Even his gravemarker reads "J. Walter". The marker also records that he used the Holloman spelling.

Walter, like T.W. and Quint , lived his life in the now familiar Center Grove/Powellsville area. He acquired farms opposite each other on both sides of US 13, about midway between Overflow Farm and Powellsville. The one that he lived on was adjacent to Quint’s on the east side of the highway (19). Walter prospered and built two fine homes on his farm. Even so, many, if not all of his final years were lived alone in a small cabin on the farm across the road. This situation arose from marital, problems between him and his wife, Lonnie Sessoms of Bertie County.

Walter died November 27, 1945 and is buried with his daughters and their husbands on his farm (23). The graveyard is located on the east farm near the southern boundary and very near the road. He and Lonnie had two children: Madie and Annie .

Note: Walter was one of two of James H. ’s progeny that I was privileged to know, the other being Thomas Watson . He is remembered as a very warm and humorous person, one that I always enjoyed encountering and listening to.

Shepley H. Holloman (11) (^)

1878 - 1902

Shepley’s middle name is believed to have been Henry. Born November 27, 1878, he also used the Holloman spelling. Unlike his older brothers, Shepley declined farming as a way of life and went to work for a railroad company (19). His daughter reports that he became a foreman charged with laying track between Suffolk, VA and Edenton, NC.

Shepley married Anna Jane Eason of Ryland, NC on March 24, 1901. Shortly after the birth of his daughter, he contracted typhoid fever and died on September 14,1902 at the age of 23. He is buried at Center Hill Baptist Church between Suffolk and Edenton on Route 32.

Shepley and Anna Jane had one daughter, Daisy Bell .

Luther Elmer Hollomon, Sr. (^)

Born: November 22, 1894 at Powellsville, NC. (17)

Married 1: Mary Erma Smith, April 20, 1918 at Portsmouth, VA (born December 15, 1896 at Berkeley, VA) (19).

Married 2: Ruth Claire Harmon, September 1940 at Newport News, VA (17) (born September 21, 1919 at Powellsville) (19)

Died: January 5, 1963 at Newport News. (21)

Luther was called "Lee" by some of his colleagues, presumably from the initials forming his given names, but mostly he was addressed by his first name (22). As a young man he became a machinist apprentice with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company in Norfolk, VA. During this period he met Erma while she was visiting his sister, Lillian at Overflow Farm. Erma and Lillian became acquainted in Portsmouth where Lillian visited with relatives, customers at the grocery market owned and operated by Erma’s father, Samuel. (19)

Luther was called for military service during World War I and reported to Wilson, NC for induction. However, the Norfolk and Southern had prevailed upon the Army to exempt its young apprentices and when he arrived at Wilson was instructed to resume his apprenticeship in Norfolk.

Subsequent to his apprenticeship, Luther worked for the Norfolk and Western Railroad in Crew, VA and Russell, KY and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in Clifton Forge, VA. The Great Depression of 1929 and the early 30’s caused his layoff from the C&O and he moved his family to Newport News in 1930 or ’31 hoping to find work with the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company (the shipyard).

The shipyard was not hiring and Luther went to work for an automobile service station to support his family (22). It was during this period, 1931 - 33 that his marriage was terminated by divorce and his two sons, Ivan Brooks and Luther Elmer, Jr. went to live with Luther’s parent’s at Overflow Farm. He left the service station and obtained a sales position with a life insurance company. As the nation recovered from the depression and economic activity accelerated he was hired by the shipyard (ca 1936) and stayed with the Company until retiring in 1961. His sons rejoined him in Newport News in the summer of 1936.

Luther married Ruth Harmon of Powellsville in 1940 and proceeded to raise a second family (17). The first child of this marriage succumbed shortly after birth and is buried at Stony Creek in the Hollomon plot. The couple then adopted infant Mary Evelyn Freeman of Powellsville and in 1951 welcomed the arrival of Virginia Lee (22).

Luther died in his sleep of a sudden coronary attack at the age of 69, less than two years after his retirement, and is buried at Stony Creek (21 , 22). He loved children, was a dedicated and compassionate father and son, a staunch friend to most, and a strong supporter of his church.

Lillian and her first husband, Wray settled in Norfolk where she presently resides. The couple had four children: Rae Earl, Wilson Lamar, Edith Yvonne, and Barbara Jane. The marriage was dissolved by divorce and Lillian later married Huntley who proved to be a very dedicated and sustaining husband and step - father (19). George Wray was born April 8, 1893, died October 7, 1967 and is buried at Huntington, WV. Huntley was born November 12, 1896 in Chesterfield County at present day Colonial Heights, VA. He and Lillian continue to make their home in Norfolk. Rae Earl was born February 1, 1920 and died September 14, 1922. She is buried at Norfolk.
